AUGUST 28TH ---Our Cultural Walk before Starting Camp Hope was another memorable moment.
I walked with the new mama, Mama Elizabeth. I so enjoyed our conversation because we had much in common in raising our children and we said we would pray for each other. The farmers we visited in the village were very friendly and we hung out with them a great deal and learned alot - some things good and some things not so good. On my arrival I was greeted by the grandmother sitting on her steps of her hut chucking nuts for us to try and she turned to me and said, " You are fat, you must be healthy and rich" I was so taken back at her words but I knew she must not have meant to be mean so I answered her by saying that actually part of my problem is that I had metal in my knees and hips from a disease called osteoarthritis and that I had been very active and little for along time but then this disease took over and caused me to be less active. She could not comprehend metal in a body, as these people do not have help , they can't even get medicine because many of the clinics have shortages and they must pay for medicine of which most could never afford it. She began to understand that I wasn't such a stranger in struggles of life as she thought I was and we became very close through the interpretors. And here she is - would you believe that she and I are the same age!!
This is Mama Elizabeth standing above us that will be the new mama in the newest My Fathers House. As I recall the grandmother had the same name, Elizabeth. Many of her children had died and her grandson, Francis, was there and talked to us. He told us that in the rainy season, a spitting cobra had entered his hut while he was sleeping and went on top of his bedding there. He rolled over and heard a thump - it was the snake. He shined a flashlight in his eyes and was able to use his cell phone to block the numbing spray from the snake and then he ran and got a gun and shot it. Wow was he lucky. Those snakes are bad and are common in the area of Zambia but we never saw a snake when we were there as I am told snakes are shy and usually stay far from people and also it was the winter season. Thank you Jesus.
